Characteristic
The use of a Stub End Fitting is commonly seen with a lap joint flange. In combination, both the Lap joint flange as well as the ASME B16.9 Stub End fitting may be used to replace welded flanges. This is especially in those instances where the assistance of a rotating reinforcement flange may be required. A benefit of using these fittings is that the ASME B16.9 Type C Stub End may be used to connect pipes of varying diameter in a system. The fitting is basically a short length of pipe. One end of the Stainless Steel Stub End is produced in an outward flared manner. On the other hand, the other end is manufactured in such a manner that it could be welded to a pipe, which has the same Nominal Pipe Size or NPS. Both the pipe as well as the Stub End Pipe Fitting must also be produced from a similar material and they both must have a similar wall thickness. Produced using the ASME B16.9, the Buttweld Long Stub End has a smoother, more gradual transition while offering a leak-proof finish. In addition to conforming with the pressure rating, the material, tolerance, testing methods, size etc, the fittings are required to adhere to the ANSI B16.9 Short Stub End Dimensions as well.
MSS SP-43 provides requirements for fabricated and wrought butt-welding fittings intended for low pressure, corrosion resistant applications.
